Viz Media announced on Wednesday that it has licensed the upcoming new Captain Tsubasa anime. The license includes digital streaming, electronic sell-through (EST), home video, and merchandise rights for North America and Latin America.
Viz Media also announced that it is partnering with Televix Entertainment to showcase the title to Latin American buyers at National Association of Television Program Executives (NAPTE) Market in Miami this January 16-18. Televix represents Viz's broadcast and digital rights for Latin American territories by licensing properties to broadcasters and distributors.
The new anime will premiere in April on TV Tokyo and other stations.
Toshiyuki Kato (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Full Moon o Sagashite) is directing the anime at the studio david production. Atsuhiro Tomioka (Inazuma Eleven, Pokémon XY) is in charge of the series scripts, and Hajime Watanabe (Ginga e Kickoff!!, School Rumble) is serving as character designer and chief animation director. Hayato Matsuo (Hellsing Ultimate, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, The World God Only Knows) is composing the music, and Yoshikazu Iwanami is directing the sound.
The anime will retell the story of Yōichi Takahashi's 1981-1988 Captain Tsubasa manga from the beginning. The original soccer manga revolves around 11-year old Tsubasa Ōzora, a boy who loves soccer and is recognized by his coach Roberto due to his skill of the sport. Tsubasa goes with his coach to Brazil in order to train for the World Cup.
