Screenwriter Simon Nagel's LinkedIn profile lists a past job as a story writer for Toei Animation, working with a team on a Gegege no Kitarō film for four months in 2012. He lists the film project as a Gegege no Kitarō reboot aimed at Western audiences.
Similarly, digital artist Kei Yoshida had listed himself as a character animator for a Gegege no Kitarō television project on his LinkedIn profile in work he has done since 2012. The project is listed above his most recent television anime work on the Majin Bone anime series.
Shigeru Mizuki's supernatural manga Kitaro (Gegege no Kitarō) began in 1959 under the name Hakaba Kitarō. The stories center on an inhuman boy who straddles the line between the human and supernatural worlds.
The manga has spawned seven television series (including one Hakaba Kitarō anime), several animated movies, and two live-action films. The most recent anime adaptation (pictured right) aired in Japan in 2007.
