Well this review came out of nowhere!

Anyway, Zetsuen no Tempest is amazing on multiple levels. It excels in its plotting and character interactions as well as ideas. The animation is great, and the music as mentioned are perfect for the kind of show it is.

One of the greatest strengths is entirely in the character of Yoshino. In the beginning he's sort of played as the self insert, exposition character. Sort of the Watson to Mahiro's Holmes. But he goes beyond that in nearly every way and it becomes obvious that he's the one in control of almost every situation, and Mahiro. This made his character absolutely fascinating, especially since he could have been such a one note character.

I actually have to object to quite a few things in this review. Mostly about the plot comments. It could have been an episode or two shorter but then we wouldn't have had the constant outsmarting of each other that is used so heavily in the end of the first season. Those few episodes of constant guessing and plotting were definitely the high part of the show. Because as you mentioned it's incredibly compelling and constructed.

Even after all these years ZnT is still one of my favorite anime, and if nothing else this made me want to rewatch it! Hope it encourages other people to do the same!

ah, this is one of my top 10.

I'm really bummed still about the fact it flopped here. I would've gladly shelled out money for the blu Ray volumes.

Pretty much agree with the entire review. It is a show that I wanted to like. It has some interesting elements, but it also had some seriously eye-rolling ones for me and yea it felt like it didn't have enough story there. I seem to recall being extremely annoyed when they took a highly intelligent and strong willed female character and reduced her to a love-struck moron. <gag> The grading is about right for me too, its in the C+ to B- range.

I have bias because Blast of Tempest is one of my favorite anime series. I recognize that it has flaws but a C+ grade is harsh; I would have agreed more with a B grade.

I disagree with Nick that the story is that poorly done. I actually agree with him that the characters are the best part of the show and that the visuals are not impressive.

I'm going to have disagree with the following parts:

Quote:
The character designs are a little flat, and the animation is very minimal outside of a handful of specific setpieces

Quote:
mediocre in terms of animation and art design.

Blast of Tempest is a beautiful show. Its character designs were one of the first things that attracted me to the show. And I loved the animation as well.

I agree with everything said here, especially the bolded part. That pissed me off so much, I almost didn't finish the show.

I would have bought this long ago if AoA put out a Blu-ray. Sort of surprised that it flopped as much as it apparently did, given their DVD-only release. I've heard a lot of mixed things on the series itself, and I have a pretty mixed relationship with both Okada and Ando, but I still like each of them, so I will give this a chance. I guess I'll check it out on Crunchyroll someday.

I agree as well, but did actually stop watching the show. And I rarely drop shows!

The bolded part was one of the reasons, but I didn't like the direction in which the story was progressing in other ways as well. Too bad, as I found the first half very gripping.

...

Yes, even the interminable debate at the end of the first half I thought was fascinating!

I really enjoyed the first part of this show, but something changed maybe halfway through. It felt like a different, more straight-forward show. The show easily peaked when they were debating in the woods with Samon. I loved that shit. It sucked to see it go downhill after that.

Count me in. I still love every other aspect of the show but to be honest, she went from "I am going to save myself" yo "But--but... I am cooking for you, notice me" And I wanted to strangle her. I mean, can't the woman fall in love without turning into a sexist cliché?

This is one of those shows where the first half was a lot better than the second half.

I agree with the story, it does feel a bit fragmented and stretched. Thing is, when a show gives me characters I end up loving, I can easily overlook things. Which is why I'm a fan of this show, strengths of the characters outweigh its stretched out story.

Blast of Tempest falls into the category. So, I agree with the review comments on the characters. I'd say they're easily the strongest part of the whole show, and it's why I'm going to be buying this on disc. It's on my list, and it isn't alone, so I'm hoping to make use of a sale in order to cut the list down a bit. Laughing

Really loved the show until the second half, it was decent but a little disappointing.
