Such a random location! But it's close, which means I have a chance to go! Still, the expected attendance sounds low, especially when Fanime brought in over 19,000 last year... I guess it'll be a greatly scaled-down version of the European one?

I wouldn't say it's expected attendance is low; Fanime might have 19,000+, but it's also an established, 4 day convention vs. JE USA being a new 3 day convention.

It makes sense to put it up in Northern California (since they were going with California); far enough away from Fanime to attract that local crowd, though it's less convenient for me.

AM2 is also the same weekend but in Anaheim, so that's good separation.

Oh cool. I want to see how French running anime convention their way.

After reading Japan Expo report on ANN, I want to have different kind of convention experience than Fanime Con or Anime Expo.

As a fan of Japanese animation artists, I'm hoping to see how Japan Expo really treats art and artists. I've felt that U.S. side always have been treating established artist and their art cheaply. Since Japan Expo put gallery/museum quality display of a guest of honor artist's works in Paris, I think they have better respect for artists than major conventions here.

Wait... what? It's only 15 minutes away from Fanime's location...

EDIT: Unless you mean time of year itself, which is what you probably meant... Not worded properly.

Japan Expo USA doesn't see itself as competition for Fanime or any other con. Fanime is Memorial Day weekend, Japan Expo USA would be lastish weekend of August. That's a three month buffer of separation time.
And yes, as someone already stated, remember that Japan Expo USA needs to establish itself here in the states, which is why the expected attendance isn't as high as Fanime's current attendance.

There were a lot of things that factored into Sean choosing Santa Clara, and I will let him speak for himself in that regard, but coming into this there are lot of con staff veterans on the team with the hopes it'll be a show people enjoy and want to come back to.

Also the nice thing to consider- it's close to SJC airport, 45 mins about from SFO, BART/Cal-Train goes through San Jose/Santa Clara, there's light rail sooooo it's a pretty easy one to get to.

Dammit, I'm down in the LA area. Oh well I guess I could road trip it up with a friend. I'm interested in what Japan Expo is going to have going for it next year, I'm much more of a manga then an anime person, so this is more my type of con.

The drive up isn't that bad, I mean well, it's CA-5 if you go that way and great if you like looking at farms, but it's a pretty smooth drive.

I know, I'm just not looking forward to being in a contained car for 6 hours. Anime hyper Definitely going to have one of my friends go with me.

Have you considered going by train? The California routes are supposed to be lovely.

That's definitely a thought, and bears investigation.

While I like that it's in my neck of the woods, I don't like the fact that it's the same weekend as AM2. Why? What sense does it make to have two conventions that aim for roughly the same audience within the same state on the same weekend? At least, when AM2 had their convention on the same weekend as AX in 2011, both cons were close enough that you could easily drive to them. It's a 6 hour drive between cons.

As to which con I'll go to, it's going to depend on which one is going to cater to my needs more.

Yes, I meant far as in time, not in distance. It flowed better in my head, with "attract that local crowd", meaning Fanime's local attendees (the San Jose/Santa Clara crowd).

And during AM2's weekend? The events planned may sway one to go to one vs. the other for those that can go to either convention.

Its actually at the old early-2000s location for FanimeCon. I've been there several times. AND its gonna be near the new 49ers stadium, so expect construction traffic.
