Does anyone else think this is pretty lame compared to Larc 2 years ago. Even the Indigo last year weren't bad albiet a much smaller name than Larc. MUCC most people havn't even heard of. Now this may be my opinion and all but honestly...of all the JROCK groups i've listened to and I'm quite a music otaku...they are probably one of the worst, not only is the singing terrible but the visual kei that they are known for isn't that great either. With all the ties they have with tofu records I was expecting better of otakon like possibly bringing AKFG or Orange Range who are much more well known especially among the anime community and in my opinion much better bands.

Well, being a fan of jrock (along with MUCC) I do understand where you are coming at. MUCC is an incredible band and quite possibly my favorite Japanese rock group but they are NOT anime-friendly.
MUCC is really underground in the anime scene and I think not many anime fans would know who they are. You would think that an "anime" convention would try and bring over "anime" musical groups such as Asian Kung Fu Generation and Orange Range (like you mentioned) because they have performed hit anime OPs and EDs. |

I have to agree, but the way Otakon is going makes me wonder somedays.
Last year, I initally thought I came to the wrong convention with all the goth and crossplay that was going on. |

So it's alot more than just an anime convention. Still, I'd rather get AKFG or Orange Range like was mentioned before. I'll still check these guys out if I'm not waiting in line. |

For what it's worth, I don't expect another L'Arc-sized concert for a while. It was fun but probably not worth the cost.

MUCC is a good name but it is a different take then the other big names that have played at Otakon.

Well, Orange Range is hosting the "ORANGE RANGE MUSIC PICNIC" in Tokyo on August 2nd, and AKFG is touring through June, then they're at the Fuji Rock Festival the weekend before Otakon, not to mention their own Nano-Mugen Festival in mid-July. Summer music festivals in Japan are very lucrative for the bigger J-Rock bands, so it's not likely you'll see the huge ones at Otakon. This absurd trend of selfishness (i.e. "Otakon should be bringing over so-and-so, not these guys") needs to stop, because it's getting ridiculous. |

I'm not trying to say they should bring so-and-so they were just examples for gods sake. All I was really getting at was for a convention of this size and based on what a lot of other even smaller conventions are getting for musical guests, I think there are many other different groups they could have gotten that would better suit Otakon. Kotoko, High and Mighty Color, Koda Kumi, TMR(again), Yoko Ishida, are just some examples. Hell if Anime USA can get Move (they were amazing ftw) then Otakon should be able to do a lot better.

Okay, first off Otakon is still two months away. They haven't even FINISHED announcing all of their guests yet, so you don't even know if they got a bigger name to perform or not. (With the Larc concert they didn't annouce that until a month before the convention.) Not to mention the staff has been hinting at something good for awhile now, so I think you should at least wait until all of the guests are announced before making snide opinions.
Also, people don't seem to understand what it takes to get big Japanese stars to preform overseas. Just because Anime USA got MOVE doesn't mean MOVE is still avaliable around the time of Otakon. You can't say boo hoo they should get bigger bands but don't take into consideration that sometimes those bands are just not avaliable. I get soo sick of listening to people whine about the guest lists who have absolutly no clue what it takes for conventions to get huge J stars. Plus they do this for free. The Larc concert two years ago was extremly expensive, and I wouldn't put it against Otakon if they don't do something that huge again. |

Did I miss something? Because I didn't see any whining. I'm not too excited about MUCC either, since they're really not my style. Hopefully there'll be another act for people that don't like v-kei (which really killed Katsucon for me this year and last year) |

I've been a Mucc fan for about 5 years. I've been attending Otakon for the past several years, and the one year I can't go, they get Mucc. *facepalm* Anybody feel like donating their plane ticket?

Alright I'll admit it was a bit pre-emptive to jump on otakon like that, considering the L'arc year they also brought Angela in (whom I like better :-p) and Angela they announced pretty early in advance while L'arc was towards the end. I will give Otakon a chance, but if MUCC is really IT than I WILL be somewhat disappointed.

I'm still lost as to why MUCC would choose an anime convention as their first North American appearence when their fantastic shows in Europe should've demonstrated to them that they're far beyond the anime scene.

Because they ARE big, and because they see Otakon as a great way to grow their market in the US. Disdain the anime hounds all you like (though this seems an odd place to do it) but Otakon has been a very successful launching point ever since TMR. It's possible, too, that like TMR, they are actually fans. Heck for all I know, they've got a track in some as-yet-unreleased anime --- or they want to get one.
Mostly, because their US label wanted to promote them and thinks Otakon is a good place to get exposure, press, and positive word of mouth. It also puts them in a place where they are likely to find a nice captive audience to buy their stuff. BTW, in case this comes up -- they are definitely still attending (we're actually adding another performance), but they want to make a big announcement and have asked us to pull the info from our site until their big press push on June 6th. |
