I'd never actually heard this before, but this does explain why I've always thought that the second half seemed a bit rushed compared to the first half. I've always considered this one an outlier as '90s fantasy series go since it had so little stylistic or content influence given how popular it was. (I suppose the one place it may have had influence is in popularizing the notion of fantasy mecha, as I can definitely recall fantasy series with mecha coming out later in the '90s but not earlier.) It's also one of the very rare series of any type to specifically blend shonen and shojo stylistic elements. Never thought about its role as a career kick-starter for so many people, even though I always knew it was Kanno's first major work (I've had the CD for the OST for over a decade now), so that was definitely an interesting perspective. Unlike a lot of people, I was always a fan of the original English dub, so now I'm very curious to see for myself how the new one stacks up. |

As it happens, I watched this title for the first time (via the old Perfect Collection) recently and loved it. Did not know it was originally slated for 39 eppies. Now I'm bummed. I would LOVED to have seen that longer version. I'll definitely be getting the Funi Blu-ray/DVD standard edition at some point. I checked out a bit of the first episode on the Funi site and was impressed with the visual quality. I didn't hear much of the new dub, but my God, anybody's version of Dilandau has to be better than that "Canadian boy's." I'll use the subs for my first rewatch - looking forward to it.

Magical Knight Rayearth came out in 1994, two years before Escaflowne. |

I also didn't know that Escaflowne was originally planned for 39 episodes, though now that does explain why it felt like it was sort of pushing to make it to the finish line. Then again, each episode felt like it moved the plot forward meaningfully, so it didn't exactly feel rushed.
Watching the Japanese interviews was interesting considering how many prominent people were involved either early on, or at the very start, of their careers. |

I watched the first episode of the dub and cringed at some butchered name pronunciations, and gave up at that point. Maybe I will have to give it another chance.

Good review. I still haven't picked up the Escaflowne sets, but then again my anime purchases practically have slowed down to a crawl lately. I'll get around to it eventually!
For the record, the infamous rumor about the 39 episodes was dismissed by the director himself during an Otakon panel after the Kickstarter:

Oh, rinmackie, rinmackie, rinmackie... ...how long have you been insane? I kid, of course. My beef with the Canadian performance (and I am Canadian, by the way) is that Dilandau the character is supposed to be dangerously insane. Unfortunately, the that actor was just too young and his voice too high and thin to bring that off, imo. Dilandau should be menacing and the voice work just didn't convey that to me. Ooooooh, I hope that is true that it was never supposed to be 39 episodes. I feel way less ripped off. I can pull Escaflowne from the "What Might Have Been..." file that currently holds Firefly, Undeclared, Freaks & Geeks and My So-Called Life (all of which had far shorter existences than they should have). |

At Otakon last year, director Kazuki Akane was asked about this, and he said that it wasn't true, and the show was always planned for 26 episodes. I don't know where this info came from in that case, since I've heard it many times before myself, and obviously believed it until Akane said it wasn't so. |

Yeah, that's the internet for you. Somebody writes something and somehow it becomes gospel. Mind you, I hate to be cynical, but the director could be lying. There may be a political reason to claim it was always going to be 26 episodes. I'm not saying he is lying, I'm just pointing out that you can't always take everything at face value when anime types are speaking publicly.

given that I'd take the word of the director as truth given it's straight from the horse's mouth and not something unsourced that could have just been an unfounded rumor or someone who wasn't fluent in reading Japanese misunderstanding something, passing on that misunderstanding, and it getting garbled along the way the way things do in a game of telephone. |

Personally, my guess is that the whole "It was originally planned to be 39 episodes" rumor was likely what was planned back when Escaflowne was originally going to be more of an action-packed show & Yasuhiro Imagawa was on board to direct. This was a few years before real production on the show started, though, so it's likely that by the time Kazuki Akane was brought in to replace Imagawa (who decided to do G Gundam, instead) & make it more of a shojo series instead it was reduced down to 26 episodes. That would both explain where the rumor possibly came from, as well as why (to his own knowledge) Akane only knew of it as a 26-episode series.

Yoshiyuki Tomino's Aura Battler Dunbine came out even earlier, in 1983. |

After having completed the new dub through binge-watching a couple weeks ago, I can honestly it was a very enjoyable trip though Gaia again, and getting through the whole thing this time around felt great. I loved the new cast overall and I had nothing to fear regarding Chuck Hunter voicing Jakuka after all; he did a damn fine job of it in the series and the movie. I always hold the Ocean crew dear to my memories for first voicing the show and movie in English, but it would be criminal to say Funimation didn't do a good enough job here; they did an outstanding job.
For anyone else who's seen the whole thing too, can someone tell me if spoiler[Jajuka actually died before telling Dilandau to go back to being the way "he" was supposed to be]? It was hard to tell. Last edited by belvadeer on Mon Jan 30, 2017 3:58 am; edited 1 time in total |
