Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody (TV) Decent This is a good show if you want something light to watch. MC has godlike powers and infinite money, which is a unique characteristic that plays out well. It's a decent harem show because it's lighthearted while the MC is mature and also offers some intrigue about the nature of the world.
Death Note (TV)
Demon King Daimao (TV)
Denki-Gai (TV)
Densha Otoko (live-action movie)
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer! (TV)
DEVILMAN crybaby (ONA) Good A dark and tragic series with weird and unique artistry in its visuals, music, and cinematography. Certainly something to watch for those who enjoy unique art, but it's definitely not a happy story, and definitely NSFW. Downright weird at times. The story is gut-wrenching sometimes. Very affecting. Questions and explores human nature, both good and bad. Overall a good series, but not a light watch.

Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan (TV) Masterpiece This is a show of strange contrasts, uniquely pleasant surprises, and self-indulgent art. I once auditioned for a play with a willful and awesome firey old bat of a director. I auditioned for the American strait laced villian role, totally bombed it, then my drama teacher gave another script, threw me on stage without any time and told me to read the comical boisterous role in a cockney accent. Afterwards I learned the director had already made up her mind who was getting this role but when she saw me do it she immediately changed her mind. I was completely different in looks and character than the other person, so it was unexpected for everyone including myself. Some projects you do, too, just seem to work beautifully. Everyone gets along, everyone has the best time of their life, and the end result is this really unique and special thing that no one could ever really reproduce. Hisone and Masotan feels like a bunch of people who really like anime and manga and stories and art--albeit in separate genres--got together, got along well, didn't give a rats ass about the formula...maybe...and made something they really liked.

HYOUKA (TV) Very good Very high quality animation, really beautiful series. Very realistic characters, setting, and story and yet it was really captivating. It's technical a hero story in which the hero trait is being able to solve mysteries, but it didn't feel like much of one. Very good quality story and anime all around. I was disappointed that the romance didn't get far. A sequel would have been nice.
I''s (OAV)
Inuyashiki Last Hero (TV) Masterpiece
(The) irregular at magic high school (TV) Excellent Good story, fun characters, excellent music and animation. Is a hero story following a brilliant engineer and his powerful sister--some wincest included. Is also one of those series that is well-formulated in that it's servicey, but so tastefully so and so well-done that it's a better show for it. All around a really great anime that absolute deserves all 26 episodes.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (TV)
Kimagure Orange Road (OAV)
Laughing Under the Clouds (TV) Excellent Great characters, excellent story, very moving, really surprising twists. High-quality production all around.

(The) Princess and the Pilot (movie) Excellent This is really good movie. I really liked these two characters. I felt it was too short and compacted into just a 2 hour movie, though. It could have been expanded quite a bit. Like, I feel like the whole movie was the 2nd act of a a 3-act play--there was barely any introduction when it could have benefited from an extra hour at least to build up more rapport with the characters. And there wasn't much of a denouement, either. I liked the ending the way it was but not showing the ultimate result of the war, the princess, the pilot, or even the scumbag officer is rather disappointing. I was impressed with the two characters, though, especially the princess.
Record of Grancrest War (TV) Decent
Scrapped Princess (TV) Very good Very good story, compelling and interesting plot. Good characters. Good drama.
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie)
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign (TV)
Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars (TV) Very good This was a much better anime than I expected. "Evangelion, where all the kids are happy and well-rounded and Nerv sponsors a lot of picnics on the beach" (Justin Sevakis). That's a good description. It's obviously meant for younger viewers, but at the same time, it has a serious scifi story that mixes culture and history and the drama of human civilization with imaginative setting. I won't risk blasphemy by outright claiming it to be like Arthur C. Clarke or Carl Sagan, but I do see similarities in the way it concerns itself with people. I appreciate that anime can do this in a kids' show. The physical scifi/supernatural elements are cheesy, but that's ok. In any case, apart from the scifi, there's politics, confusion, mystery, espionage, existential threat, and...picnics on the beach. This is produced by Madhouse, and by the same team that did Stellvia. The script is really good. The actors are good too, but the script makes all the normal scenes feel really human and life-like. It's almost like half the show was ad-libbed by good friends. It either ignores or defies a number of tropes, too. The hero is a secondary character, for one thing. It works well.
Snow White with the Red Hair (TV)
Snow White with the Red Hair (TV 2)
Space Pirate Captain Harlock (TV)
Summer Wars (movie) Excellent
Tohai Densetu Akagi -Yamini Maiorita Tensai- (TV)
Valvrave the Liberator (TV)
Violet Evergarden (TV) Excellent Both a creative and emotional story that focuses on one unique girl's life experience and personal growth. Is episodic in that each episode tends to tell a different story, but serial in terms of character growth. Lots of heavy emotional drama. Absolutely stunning animation and music. Definitely a must-see. Possibly best of its season.
